[Pyrex] Efficiency

Does anyone have an estimate of how efficient Pyrex is when it is 
running code restricted to code chunks that have a direct correspondence 
to C code?  I'm thinking of useing it instead of C for a major chunk of 
a program, and want to know if this is a reasonable approach.  (A 
reasonable speed penalty is quite reasonable, as it would need to link 
with Python code for part of it's function anyway.)
