Since you brought this up yourself, there's also Cython. It doesn't
support module-private classes (yet), but at least it's the most advanced
Pyrex fork, and yes, we do (and did) "tweak things around" in it. It's
more of a getting-close-to-complete Python compiler by now (it recently
got nested functions and lambda statements) and has some other advanced
features, too.
